The key to integration lies in human connection
That is why Språknøkler has developed the concept
"Meaningful Encounters"
A model for sustainable and holistic integration practice, with the values of psychological safety, belonging, and recognition at its core.
Moving beyond good intentions to values-driven initiatives put into practice, across education, work, and community life.
The goal?
To create a holistic and long-term integration practice, with safety, belonging, and recognition for the individual at its centre. A practical and values-based alternative to today's integration practice (and policy).
Språknøkler helps schools, employers, and organizations implement values-based initiatives when working with adult immigrants and refugees.
The goal of these initiatives is to put values into practice, creating positive ripple effects for the individual, the workplace, and the local community. Through the model Meaningful Encounters, we work through three steps on the path toward safety, belonging, and recognition for your participants, interns, or employees.
Meaningful Encounters is therefore about creating inclusive and safe classrooms, workplaces, and meeting spaces, so that more people can thrive in education, work, and every day life.
This benefits not only the individual, it benefits society as a whole.
I need this!
Adult Education
Meaningful encounters with adult immigrants and refugees in the classroom — in language training (SLA), education and courses.
Working life
Meaningful encounters with adult immigrants and refugees in the workplace — through work placements, language practice, as employees, or in-company courses.
Volunteering
Meaningful encounters with adult immigrants and refugees in voluntary organisations — at language cafés, language training with refugee guides, or social meeting places.
Since its founding in January 2020, Språknøkler has worked to spread knowledge, materials, and professional support to teachers in adult education across Norway. Through two digital membership portals, a podcast, handbooks for Fagbokforlaget, and professional development days and packages for schools and regions, Språknøkler has become Norway's largest enterprise for teachers in adult education, and a national movement centred on working with values in encounters with adult refugees learning Norwegian as a second language.
In 2026, that movement got a new name: Meaningful Encounters.
The goal is for all teachers in adult education to know where to go to find adapted teaching materials for adults learning Norwegian as a second language, and for leaders in adult education to know where to find relevant professional development for their staff, so they can create Meaningful Encounters in the classroom. But working to strengthen the education adult refugees receive is not enough to solve today's challenges in the field of integration. We must think holistically, and above all radically differently, if we are to help more people into the workforce and into living good lives in a new country. That is why Meaningful Encounters is a concept that encompasses adult education, but also working life and volunteering.
Because how do we actually want society, working life, and education to look in the future for the people who live and work there? How can we use the values of psychological safety, belonging, and recognition as tools in practical measures for increased life mastery, and thereby create positive ripple effects in areas such as sick leave, employment, and the next generation?
That is what Meaningful Encounters explores.
The days of values being nothing more than nice words on the wall are over. Values are the foundation for ALL practice at Språknøkler, and now I help schools, workplaces, and voluntary organisations achieve the same. As an alternative to today's integration practice (and policy), Språknøkler puts people at the centre and works on long-term solutions that benefit both the individual and society. That is sustainability in practice!
That is why Språknøkler works with values-based initiatives in education, working life, and everyday life, for social sustainability and to create dignified lives for refugees and immigrants.
For a more values-based integration practice, where the key to integration lies in meaningful encounters in education, working- and everyday life.
"There are many benefits to investing in Språknøkler. I chose Språknøkler because I could see early on that it was the right partner to move our school in a positive direction, and as a leader, I have finally found an organisation that delivers on the terms of adult education.
The impact has been remarkable.
The collaboration with Språknøkler brings development and has collectively raised our staff. Within the professional learning community, development is created that generates quality throughout the service. We now have highly reflective teachers who both change their practice and are challenged in light of the values we hold and key guidelines such as the curriculum. Our staff think about the whole person, actively use the materials, have reignited their passion, and create varied and well-grounded teaching."— Principal in adult education, following the completion of the competency package "Meaningful Encounters in the Classroom"
Språknøkler + the Sustainable Development Goals = a perfect match!
Språknøkler works toward several Sustainable Development Goals through its work with Meaningful Encounters.
Goals in focus:
No. 4 (Quality Education)
No. 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)
No. 10 (Reduced Inequalities)
Språknøkler's work with values-based integration practice is an initiative for increased social sustainability.
There is a lot of talk about sustainable development goals, the green transition, and sustainable economies, but what is the real foundation needed to achieve all forms of sustainability? It is social sustainability. And yet, we hear surprisingly little about it.
So what is social sustainability, in short?
Social sustainability is about building societies characterized by trust, safety, and belonging, and that provide access to goods such as work, education, and thriving local communities, for everyone. It is about seeing the whole person, working for social justice, and facilitating participation and collaboration. In other words, creating good societies where there is room for everyone, with all the diversity a society is made up of. This goes hand in hand with Språknøkler's vision that all immigrants and refugees should be met with safety, belonging, and recognition in education, work, and everyday life.
The UN's Sustainable Development Goals require action from everyone by 2030. Yet there is a notable absence of clear and concrete plans for how social sustainability is to be achieved, perhaps especially at the municipal level and in the public sector.
"Research findings show that the majority of Norwegian municipalities find sustainable development to be a challenging concept, and that it is difficult to give it specific content and communicate its purpose in planning processes. This is particularly challenging for the further implementation of social sustainability in local plans" (Nerbøberg & Busengdal, 2023).
Added to this is the challenge that creating socially sustainable societies requires cross-sector collaboration in order to develop a holistic approach.
This, together with the definition of socially sustainable societies, is the entire foundation for the launch of Meaningful Encounters;
To create one model that works across sectors and areas of responsibility, so that we can build a more comprehensive and long-term approach to integration work. Not as lofty goals and values on paper, but as concrete practice on the ground: In adult education classrooms, in the workplace, and at community spaces in the voluntary sector.
This means you can get help launching values-based initiatives at your workplace, school, organization (or municipality) to address social sustainability in practice. All you need to do is get in touch with Språknøkler, and we will put together a plan that works for you.
And do you know what the bonus is of investing in social sustainability? You get a head start on working with the other two dimensions of sustainability: climate and economy. Because when we strengthen the individuals that make up society, we also strengthen society itself.
Both economically and in creating a more sustainable future for us all.

Meaningful Encounters in podcast format!
How can we amplify more voices in the integration debate?
Things get shared on social media and in opinion pieces, but with limited characters and space, the conversation often stays at the surface and I want to do something about that! So in January 2026, I launched a dedicated segment in the Språknøkler-podcast called "Meaningful Encounters," where I invite selected guests with the aim of doing just that: giving a platform to more voices that reflect the diversity of perspectives and experiences in what integration looks like in Norway today.
What matters to us? How do we want education, working life, and everyday life to look? And how can we work with psychological safety, belonging, and recognition to create a more holistic integration practice? That is the heart of Meaningful Encounters.
